Virgin Media are also complaining to Ofcom about Premier League TV rights:

Virgin Media today demanded media regulator Ofcom launch an investigation into how Premier League TV rights are sold because viewers are paying “the highest prices in Europe”.

The TV firm urged Ofcom to use its power to intervene in the way the rights are sold because the value of the next auction, due to begin later this year, is set to soar a “further 60 per cent”.

Ofcom said: “We are considering the complaint.”

The Premier League said: “Live Premier League audio-visual rights have always been sold in a transparent and open process. Regulators have examined our rights packaging and sales process in considerable detail in the past and found both of them to be compliant with UK and European competition law. If Ofcom chooses to investigate this complaint, we will of course be happy to demonstrate to Ofcom that this is the case.”

I watch the Australian RL on Premier Sports and they take an ad break every time there's a conversion or major injury. It keeps running here and often the commentators keep chatting to each other rather than to the audience. They are in a different class from football commentators here.

Sky and BT can only pay the Premier League this ridiculous amount of money if people keep forking out stupid money each month to watch a few games.

I think the whole thing will eventually implode. People will no longer want to pay £40 each month to have Sports channels or pay £50 to go to a game.

Its in our hands. We moan about the prices but still keep paying. We stop paying and they'll be begging us to come back a fraction of the price before long.

It's our good old form of capitalism. Only a leftie would decry it.

I agree.

We should go back to the good old days of having The Big Match on once a month followed by Highway to Heaven.

If you're paying £51 you're an idiot. I pay £46 for everything Sky do, including anytime calls and fibre optic broadband.

I don't get why anyone would pay that.

Same reason I got rid of sky is the ads and the love affair with the top clubs on each week.

I cancelled my subscription 6 years ago. The price is way too high. But the other thing that's always pissed me off about sky is that even though you're paying a very high price they still bombard you with adverts and sky promos, especially on the golf.
It's time people started to boycott such an overpriced product. All your money does is line the pockets of over paid, average footballers and their agents.

Sports fans in Britain have been screwed over since the birth of subscription television.
For example, the 1992 ICC World Cup broadcast rights were awarded to BSkyB (I think).
If you did not have access to a telly hooked up to one of their dishes, you got to see almost NOTHING of that tournament.

Contrast Australia's approach to Pay TV. When Kerry Packer saw the looming threat, he sidled up to Little Johnny Howard, and said "Listen John Boy, the Australian public need to be protected from the spectre of having to pay to watch sport on television. So here's some legislation I've written for you. Be a good chap and have it enacted into law.".
The legislation is known as "the anti-siphoning legislation". It essentially states that the free-to-air networks should have first call on almost every sporting event (whether in Australia or abroad). Pay TV still gets the opportunity to broadcast those sports, but usually in delay after it has been shown live on free-to-air.

Kerry Packer was a real altruist. Ignore the fact that the legislation he directed the Howard government to enact also protected the commercial interests of Channel 9.

I fucking HATE it!! It might seem preferable to get to see sport for free, but not when you have to endure a deluge of adverts.
Cricket - Ads after every over.
Tennis - Ads after every game.
Rugby - Ads at almost every break in play.

Football - Thankfully football has mostly been on SBS, which has a long standing relationship with the game, but a couple of times in the last 12 years the World Cup has been broadcast on Channels 7 and 9. They had to sneak ads in at times the ball went out of play. Consequently, the viewers missed bits of the game.
